On the Autobahn

CHAPTER 13

Rothenburg had been good to us, and to tell the truth, we could have happily spent another couple of days there exploring the cobbled streets- but our reunion date with J and J was fast approaching, and we had a lot of ground to cover between Bavaria and Denmark.

We threw our bags in the Benz, and hit the autobahn. With Kacey goading me on, we sped along as fast as I dared: 100mph, 110mph, 120mph… when the wheel would begin to shake- my cue to let up on the peddle slightly.  With no speed limit on the German highway, we were making amazing time, but even so, true sports cars, Audis, BMWs, and Mercedes would go flying by us like we were standing still.  Our little rental car, Benz or not, was just inherently inferior and ill equipped to keep up with the big boys on the autobahn.

You do feel like you are missing something though, as the country side slides by in a blur, so we made a point of stopping at any interesting looking pull-offs.  The highlight for the day was the picturesque village of Wurzburg, overshadowed by the domineering Marienberg Fortress.
