Around the Walls

CHAPTER 12

One of the things that sets Rothenburg apart from the other medieval towns along the Romantische Straße, is the true to form defensive wall encircling the city- topped with archetypal ramparts, canon ports, and archer’s crenels- just as it would have been a thousand years ago.  A lot of the wall is actually original, but some portions were destroyed during WWII.  Happily though, the raised sections were re-built, and the whole thing restored with the help of donations from all over the continent after the war- it seems that everyone who has seen it reserves Rothenburg a special place in their heart.

A circuit of the wall will take you a few good hours, partially because it is quite meandering, and studded with interesting things to look at every so often, and partially because you have to hunch over to avoid nocking your head on the wooden roof beams, which invariably slows your progress- they must have been short back in the day!  We prolonged our wall top walk even longer by bringing along a brown bag bottle of vino, and so made a day of it.  Best part about it… completely free!
