Jolly ol’ England

CHAPTER 2

In the fall of 2011, with our departure to Antarctica looming, we decided that the best thing for our soon to be ice bound souls would be a relaxing trip to see our friends Jake and Jackie in London.  They had been living there for about a year, and at the time, were planning on staying only about a year more.  Considering we would be down in the southern hemisphere for the foreseeable future, we prudently made our plans to come visit them before they jumped back across the pond, and we lost out on a free place to stay!

Never being ones to settle for the customary week or two long vacation, our itinerary soon evolved into a month long tour of London, Germany, and Denmark.  Flying to Europe is always the most expensive part, so why not stay longer and really get our monies worth??  Well, we did, and we did.

Our first stop was a 10 day sightseeing bonanza in London, where we would go out every morning with a few high profile destinations in mind, take lots of photos and read lots of informative plaques, and then finish up in time to be comfortably seated at the pub du jour by the time Jake and Jackie punched out from the office and would come meet us.

Day one we were a little jet lagged, and only managed to get out and about in time for the pub portion of our day.  Day two on the other hand, we pulled off a better performance- taking in West Minster Abbey, a boat ride down the Thames, and the National Gallery.  That may not sound like much, but the idea here was to spread out our list of sights so we could actually enjoy going to all of them, rather than stubbornly cramming it all into a few hectic and exhausting days.
