The Galata Tower

CHAPTER 20

You wouldn’t believe we could pack so much into a single day, but after the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar, we had just enough daylight left to check out the venerable Galata Tower, which dominates the Istanbul skyline from every vantage point, and has been doing so for the last 700 years.  From the observation deck 200 feet in the air, you can see the entire city, with its winding streets, crowded apartment buildings, and dozens, if not hundreds of domes and minarets.

Not being the type of travelers to negligently let 5-o’clock roll by, we made our way down to a café for happy hour with an equally impressive view… of the base of the tower.  Then, feeling hungry, and yearning again for that fantastic view, we ventured back up into the sky for more drinks, and dinner, on the terrace of the famous Londres Hotel, while the lazy Turkish sun set over the endless expanse of humanity that is Istanbul.
