A better way to play football

CHAPTER 24

As the week rolled on, our adventures in Sydney continued.  A day out at the famous Bondi beach left us content, if not a little red.  The Sydney Fish Market reaffirmed my finicky aversion to seafood.  And a visit to the Museum brought us face to face with a giant kangaroo- sadly it was stuffed.  On a whim we stopped into the box office of a large stadium we were walking past, just to see what, if anything might be playing.  Four hours later we were seated high up in the nosebleeds watching our first ever match of Australian Rules Football- an altogether more exciting game than rugby or American Football, at least in our opinions.  The final score: Sydney 136, Melbourne 36.  I mean come on, in what other sport can you outscore your opponent by 100 points, and still have the whole stadium on their feet cheering wildly at every goal?  We loved it.

Our last day in Sydney was fittingly grey and cloudy.  A perfect travel day.  We said goodbye to the Opera House one last time, the city skyscrapers and Harbour Bridge standing sentinel on either side, and caught the shuttle to the airport.  In nine hours we would be back in the United States, after seven long months abroad.  Back in the US, but not home.  We had one last stop to make, a stop we had dreamed about every night in our cold little tent on the icy expanses of Antarctica… we were finally going to warm up, we were going to Hawaii.
