Old building in a nice old part of town.  Well restored inside, with beautiful and comfortable terrace.  Run by a family that lives downstairs.  Free breakfast was pretty good.  We talked to a business man next door who gave us the code to use his wifi for free for a day (but he shut it off on us??).

At the top of the saddle between the hills of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion.  Clean, airy and modern feeling.  Large rooms with very comfy beds.  The lady who owned it was very hospitable and always there and was always cleaning.  Breakfast was good and plentiful.  Within close distance to a number of great little restaurants and shops.  One of our favorite hostels of the trip.

Camped right beneath a waterfall on the south side of the valley.  There were a bunch of tourists there till dark but they all left.  Was a beautiful moonrise.  A few miles up the canyon on a dirt road going through the small village of Termales de Maipo (or Baños de Maipo depending on what your map says) at the end of the road (which was blocked off by a large boulder rock slide) and then up a gully leading up the side of the hill you can fnd dozens, even hundreds probably, of ammonite and other fossils, just lying on the open ground!  Further up near the cliffs would probably have more and better condition specimens.

Pretty nice campground, but no “designated” spots.  Had electricity and parilla grills with wash sinks and running water at some spots.  Nice and shady.  Big pool, but a bit dirty from the hundreds of kids in it.  Small store with bread and beer- no produce or ice (usually).  Also had cabins for rent. Was convenient to take local bus to town or to Iguacu Falls.

·Public bathrooms- were horribly dirty

Park wasn’t really that great, just a bunch of palm trees, no palm trees by the camping though.  The “beaches” were a joke- just mud banks on the side of the dirty River Uruguay.  Quite a few bugs and a bunch of viscacha (big rodents) and some sort of monitor lizards (?) at the camp.  Not really worth it, would have been better at a gas station.

Feb 10 &           Tracey’s Apartment

S    34.5977º      ·Free WiFi internet

to us by Nick, but not a normal garage.  He charged us $10 pesos ($2.50 USD) per day when we were at home in Colorado, but then changed his mind when we got back and charged us $20 pesos ($5 USD) per day for a week when we were renting the apartment.

·Private bathroom

An incredible, fully furnished, little apartment on the edge of the Palermo neighborhood.  Big living room with futon and dining table, small kitchen with fridge, oven and stove, and plenty of cooking utensils.  Bathroom down stairs- small shower, and the hot water was a little fickle.  Wrought iron stair case led up to big main bedroom with queen bed- and also a little study/guest room with a small bed.  We stayed our first night there on the futon on February 10th for free when the Nick and Rochelle, the Ramblewriters, were renting the place. We met the owner then and reserved the apartment for a week when we got back from the states.  Was great having our own apartment rather than a janky hostel and was cheaper than getting a hostel for a week.  We parked around the corner at “Leo’s Garage” referred to us by Nick, but not a normal garage.  He charged us $10 pesos ($2.50 USD) per day when we were at home in Colorado, but then charged us $20 pesos ($5 USD) per day for a week when we were renting the apartment.  Tracey the owner was a very friendly Scottish lady who also referred us to her driver to get to the airport- $80 to $100 pesos ($20 to $25 USD)- more expensive than a cab or public transport, but much more convenient and safe!  You can book her apartment on airbnb.com

Very cozy hotel with in room wall heaters.  The owner was really nice and kind of acted as a tourist information person.  The room was a bit small, short slanted ceiling, but the queen bed was comfy.  Bathroom right across the hall was nice, but the showers were downstairs by the dorm rooms.  A lot of travelers hung out down stairs all day and night, but we went into town instead- was only two blocks from the main street.  The owner offered that we could park inside his fence, but we left the truck out on the street with no problems.

Tiny family run hostel- they lived downstairs.  A few blocks from the main part of town.  The rooms were a bit ratty and our bed was broken at the foot.  We put the comforter on the floor because it looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a couple of years.  WiFi worked kind of in the room, but much better downstairs.  Free breakfast was just tea and croissants.  They let us park in their gated back yard.  In the back of the property there were a few kabanas for rent that looked newer and much nicer.  The bathroom upstairs was a bit janky, dirty, and didn’t have a shower curtain.

At the north entrance to the park.  Fire pits, picnic tables, and free fire wood- though it was all really wet and really large- luckily though, we still had our small hand axe.  To park in the truck, rather than tent camping, we had to park away from the main part next to some bathrooms that were under construction.  The main bathrooms were nice, with plenty of hot water, but you could only tent camp over there.  Nearby refugio was $40 USD per person and the hotel is $300 USD for a double room, so $8 USD per person for camping was a pretty good deal considering.  Very cold and rainy/snowy most of the time.  The mountains were constantly covered by clouds so we couldn’t see anything.  We didn’t even go for a hike because the weather sucked so much.  It must be much much much better in the summer time.

The staff was very nice- they upgraded us to class Cabin BBB (private double with window) when we checked in!  Boarding was easy, they let us drive ourselves onto the ship.  Ship was a little “old” feeling- was built in the 70’s, not a modern cruise ship.  BB Cabin was very small, two skinny bunks and about enough room to stand up, and 2 locker cabinets.  The sheets were a little dingy and old looking and the comforter was gross- so we always took it off before getting into bed.  Bathrooms were ok, but the showers had a button to make the water come out, that is timed for only a few seconds, like at a McDonalds bathroom sink, and you had to constantly keep pushing it.  The food was very basic and not very tasty, but we always left full- it was a buffet and you could get more if you wanted.  Spent most of our time up in the pub, typing on the computer, drinking our own booze (bring lots with you!), watching crummy pirated movies on their big flat screen, or playing cards.  The weather was cold, but clear on 2 days.  The view was incredible, snow capped mountains tumbling into the sea right next to us.  Saw dolphins, seals, a condor, and 2 blue whales!

·Street parking in front of hostel with no problems

·Shared bathroom was dirty, shower sucked and was dirty

There were only dorm rooms in this hostel, but because it was low season, we got our own room.  Shitty bunk beds that felt like they might collapse.  Good location at the top of the hill, within walking distance to the beach and the shopping district.  Owner was a really nice young French guy, traveling surfer, who started the hostel a year or two ago.

Amazing hotel and spa in the great little gaucho town of San Antonio.  The price was comparable to the hostel next door, but got us a big apartment with a big king bed, private bath, living room with a fridge and a microwave, a beautiful courtyard with two pools and free breakfast (lots of pastries, but only meat and cheese one morning- La Kacey didn’t complain), wifi that was slow, but worked in the room, free bike rental (they were very old though), and the best part of all: an hour and a half visit to the spa every day- the Circuito del Agua- free!!!  It was great, a wet and dry sauna, 2 hot tubs, and a message chair.  Kacey also paid $50 pesos ($12.50 USD) for a 45 min message from a real mesus. We loved it- it was our favorite place of the whole trip.  We loved the town too- there was an old boliche (gaucho bar) 3 blocks away that had cheap drinks and delicious picadas- we went there every night for dinner.  To top it all off, we each got custom handmade leather gaucho boots for ~$200 USD by Jose A. Rodriguez at 402 Avda. Güiraldes.

Apr 30-              Rented Apartment

W   58.4147º       ·Free internet- wall cable

·Parked in gated garage in bottom of building for free

·Private bathroom

Awesome furnished studio apartment we found on www.4rentargentina.com.  Was clean, with nice furniture and linens, big bed, a tv, decent kitchen, fridge, patio with chairs and table, and even a cell phone to use- we just had to buy our own pre-loaded SIM card.  Not quite as close to the cooler neighborhood of Palermo as our last apartment, this neighborhood was mostly sky-rise buildings with not too many shops or restaurants nearby.  But we had the bus system pretty well figured out so getting around was no problem.  Way, way, WAY better than paying the same amount for some shitty hostel.

Picked up the truck without too much problem, but they left the keys in the ignition and the battery was dead, which caused a slight delay at the port, and then again at the apartment because it hadn’t recharged at all- had to buy a new battery.  Finally got on the road, drove south to DC to pick up 8 cases of 2 Buck Chuck at Trader Joe’s for our wedding, then drove out through Frederick to show Kacey my old town, and then kept on until got tired and stopped at this Podunk gas station.

Not really “pirate camping” because you are allowed to sleep there.  Slept in the back of the truck, but didn’t pop the tent.  Last night of our trip!
